Those black streaks are algae
The dark streaks running down so many Baton Rouge roofs are an algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Left alone, it spreads, holds moisture against the roof and makes a house look older than it is. Moss and lichen follow in the shady spots.
Pressure washing a shingle roof is a mistake. High pressure knocks loose the granules that protect shingles from the sun, which shortens the life of the roof. We clean roofs with a soft wash instead: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure that kills the algae and lets it rinse away.
Roofs we clean
- Asphalt shingle roofs
- Metal roofs
- Black streaks and algae
- Moss and lichen
- Gutters and fascia
- Soffits and eaves
What to expect
We protect landscaping, gutters and downspouts before we start, apply the solution from the top down, and let it work before rinsing. Most streaks are gone the same day; heavy moss and lichen can keep fading over the following weeks as rain finishes the job.
“Todd did an amazing job … they truly did a great job at a great price.”
Common questions
Will roof cleaning damage my shingles?
Not with a soft wash. The damage comes from high pressure, which we don't use on shingles.
How often should a roof be cleaned?
Many roofs in this area need it every few years, sooner under heavy shade. Once streaks come back, it's time.
Do you clean metal roofs?
Yes. Metal roofs get the same low-pressure approach, with a solution suited to the finish.
